Three simple steps to successful networking at Lake Land’s job fair

Want to get an edge in the job market? Take advantage of the Lake Land College 2010 Job Fair on Wednesday, March 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Field House.

The event is free and offers students and community members the opportunity to network with more than 50 potential employers.

Prepare for the event as you would a job interview.  The following are three simple steps to successful networking at this year’s job fair:

  1. Prepare- Visit Career Services on campus for professional help with your resume or view tips online at www.lakelandcollege.com/careerservices. Be sure that your resume is polished and up-to-date. Consider your strengths, weaknesses, skills and interests and be able to talk about them in relation to the position you are interested in.  In addition, gather examples of your work and create a portfolio to be used in the job search process. Also, gather examples of your work to put into a portfolio.

  1. Explore- Know your area of interest for employment, and find out which employers will be at the job fair by visiting www.lakelandcollege.com/jobfair/. Be sure to do some additional research to find out more about the company.

  1. Execute- Develop a game plan and goal for the day. Dress appropriately for the event.  “First impressions are lasting impressions,” and employers will be evaluating you as a potential employee. Bring your portfolio, lots of resumes, a pen and a notepad. Be ready to deliver a clear and concise description of exactly what you are seeking.

Many employers come to this event ready to hire. Those participants who look professional and are well prepared will have the advantage.

Get started on great employment opportunities by putting your best foot forward. Contact Career Services today at 217-234-5288 or careerservices@lakelandcollege.edu
