Lake Land received the TRiO ETS grant in 2006. Since then, the program set out to identify 600 qualified students in grades 6-12 in 25 schools in 13 school districts, all within a 100 mile radius. The program helps eligible students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to realize their dream of a college education.
"I really didn't know where I was going to go to college, let alone how I was going to pay for it," said Rikki Bailey, Cowden. "Being in TRiO helped me work through my concerns."
Bailey, who is now a Lake Land student, said she also enjoyed the trips and college visits offered through the program. All college visits, trips and activities, including transportation and meals, are free to the students.
"The trips broadened my horizons and gave me many excellent colleges to consider attending," Bailey said.
Each year, the group is required to publish an annual performance report to the Department of Education. For the 2008-2009 year, TRiO ETS posted several major increases.
The number of high school seniors in TRiO ETS that received a high school diploma increased to 99 percent, up 6 percent from last year.
"TRiO ETS seniors receive intensive services that encourage them to graduate from not only high school, but also college," said Lori Ohnesorge, coordinator and outreach advisor. "We were very pleased that last year, 85 percent of our students enrolled in postsecondary education, which is an excellent number and is up from 77 percent from last year."
In addition, 95 percent of students applied for financial aid, which was an increase from the 2007-2008 school year where only 86 percent of students had applied.
“TRiO gives you the stepping stones to rise above average expectations," said Ethan Cochran, graduate of Paris High School
